Small Businesses Getting Greener
April 02 2009
According to a survey of small business owners (conducted on behalf of Alliance and Leicester Commercial Bank) it seems that more businesses are waking up to the benefits of going green.
Around a third of the small business owners questioned were hoping that green improvements would lower their operating costs (the Environment Agency estimate savings of around £1,000 per employee per year by being energy efficient), but the drive for nearly two thirds of small business owners was environmental concern, with just under half of them spending money on eco-initiatives, cutting their carbon costs as well as their bills
These are some of the ideas being put into practise to become energy efficient:
• 55% make sure all electrical equipment is turned off when not in use,
• 51% have invested in low energy light bulbs,
• 30% have cut down on heating and air conditioning usage
• 19% have upgraded old equipment to more energy efficient versions.
• 40% said staff re-use paper
• 28% have a recycling scheme in place for office waste
• 16% allow staff to work from home to cut down on travel.
Almost half of the small businesses questioned would like to implement even more environmentally- friendly practices. Maybe this isn’t the best time for the government to stop grants that would help them do just that?
