Patio Heaters - To Ban Or Not To Ban?
July 25 2007
Are warm outdoor evenings going to be banned?
As you know, I believe that it is up to the individual to decide how much change they want to make in their lives - to ‘do their bit’ - to help with climate change, the environment, fair trade, shopping locally…..to make the world a better place and life even better!
Others do not always share my attitude. Some people always believe they have the answer (informed or otherwise) and are determined to make us listen. I am happy to listen to anyone’s opinion and will always give it careful thought. If the information is new to me I will research it further from all angles. Not so Mr/Ms Always Right. So it was with no surprise that I heard of the potential ban. Banning what? I hear you ask - air conditioning, flying, driving?
No…the culprit is the outdoor heater, used on patios of wine bars, hotels and bars with outdoor eating facilities. Those al fresco nights, warm balmy evenings, chatting with friends, in the fresh air, who needs the Mediterranean? Some nights, the temperature falls a little, and for a couple of hours the patio heaters may come on. This lets us enjoy our lives and enjoy the benefits of our (short) summers to the full. People search out places with this facility and so local businesses flourish. Great!
If people cannot enjoy the British summer in this way, then maybe they will book a holiday abroad (flights) and live in air-conditioned rooms because it is so hot. By having the humble patio heater, are we not preventing this contribution to climate change, that far exceeds a little heater on for a few hours a year?
‘Ban them’ comes the idea, probably dreamed up by someone needing to justify their salary, sitting in an air conditioned room with lights blazing, before they go home to book a flight to America to enjoy the current exchange rate.
Banning a few hours of energy use per year is such a small idea when so much energy is wasted in office blocks (including government buildings) in lighting alone. You will forgive me for being cynical, but could this possibly be a case of taking our attention away from other more important issues? May it be a case of being seen to be green, while actually doing so very little? A token gesture perhaps?
I will leave you to decide and make up our own minds.
Wishing you love and health
Susie x
