Supermarkets Boycott Proposed Mega Dairy

The Independent is reporting today that leading supermarkets will refuse to buy milk from any mega-dairy, referring to the proposed 8,100-cow dairy in Nocton, Lincolnshire. Plans had been shelved in April following uproar from residents and animal rights activists, but yesterday the owners of Nocton announced new plans for a 3,770 cow-unit, that they will be submitting for approval.
Apparently, Tesco and Sainsbury have both written to a Parliamentary group stressing their commitment to animal welfare and said they had no plans to buy milk from Nocton, and Waitrose's managing director Mark Price is reported as saying that the dairy would not fit with the Waitrose way of doing business and that he is anxious that it represents the first step along the way towards a highly-industrialised, US approach to farming
Marks & Spencer also ruled out the idea, having a policy of not buying milk from super-dairy farms and will remain committed to the dedicated dairy farms that currently suppply them with milk.
Farmers need to be paid what their milk is worth, rather than be forced to find a way of producing cheaper and cheaper milk. Let your local M.P. know how much you want to support your local dairy farmers and avoid the horror of ever having battery cows in the U.K.
