Beat The Winter Blues And January 21st!!
January 22 2008
Apparently January 21st is supposed to be the day when we feel at our lowest – a month after Christmas, still dark and cold with bills to pay and feeling run down with coughs and colds. Goodness that does sound a bit depressing!!
Well I have an antidote. You can beat the winter blues with a little know how, and will soon be looking forward to spring (only a few weeks away remember!). Here are Susie’s top tips for beating the blues and bringing back your zing!
1. If you eat organic food the news is good – you are already on to a winner. Our resident Nutritional Therapist, Rita Carmichael, tells us that organic food has been proven to be more nutritious, helping us fight those bugs and blues.
2. If you can spare some cash for a massage, try a reflexology one as this prevents as well as treats and can help winter aches and pains, stress and hormone imbalances following a little over-indulgence! If cash is tight, you can help yourself by breathing deeply and gently massaging the top pads of your thumbs for a few seconds to relieve sinus congestion.
3. Walkie walkie! I know you may not feel like going out for a walk, but if you can get into the daylight (I realise it may not be sunny!) for half an hour in the middle of the day the benefits are enormous – both physically and mentally. Loughborough University has shown that even a ten minute brisk walk can increase your fitness. The daylight hits a part of our brain that makes us feel happier so a win-win situation!
4. Comfort eating can be healthy too! At this time of year we crave warming soups and casseroles. Also sweet things! Sugar is addictive so try to go without for three weeks and you will stop craving it. Try honey and dark chocolate for a healthier option
5. Think positive. Repeating a positive affirmation each day out loud means we hear it and our brain then believes it. If you doubt it, think how often you have been affected by a cruel comment about your figure / weight / clothes. See?!
6. If the dark really gets you down, try a natural light to wake you up in the morning. You can add sounds that you like – waves, birdsong or croaking frogs!
7. Life Coaching really can help. I know of a lady in the midlands with a strong business background that asks all the right questions to make you look at all aspects of your life – even the ones that may be slightly uncomfortable (like not giving friends enough time!)
