Human Waste Recycled To Make Fertilizer
September 29 2010
Phosphorus is used for fertilizers and is usually mined in the United States, Russia and China, but stocks are running low and companies have been looking for alternatives
This has led to Thames Water to investigate the possibility of extracting the phosphorus from the city's waste and turning it into premium fertiliser. Not only is this 'recycling' good news for fertilizer companies, it also helps water companies, as the phosphorus in sewage settles inside pipes, narrowing them and costing the water companies lots of money to maintain the pipes.
The new fertiliser will be processed and sold by the Canadian company Ostara for use on golf courses and gardens. (The name Ostara actually means the spring equinox, the time to celebrate planting and the new growing season, so it is aptly named!!). Ostara have developed new nutrient recovery solutions to recover nutrients from waste water and use them for environmentally friendly fertilizers. Read more about this amazing company on this link to the Ostara website
Reuse and recycle - you know it makes sense :)
