Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall Supports Food For Life
June 24 2011
Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall spoke at the Food for Life Partnership at their conference on 22 June 2011
He said "I don’t think we should be hearing excuses from the government and Michael Gove about re-focusing schools on results because independent surveys have shown that when the Food for Life Partnership gets involved in schools, attainment goes up and outstanding Ofsted results double. And no excuses from local authorities either about the need for cuts, because the last contract that went to a Food for Life approved caterer reduced the cost of a meal by 50p, while still meeting the Silver Standard of the scheme."
Nothing further to add Hugh!!
The New Economics Foundation has also found that schools in Nottingham and Plymouth involved in the Food for Life project have dramatically increased the amount of local and seasonal food procured for school meals.
This has resulted in more money being spent in the local community, more children eating school meals, additional jobs and improved job security for local employees, an increased customer awareness of the value of fresh food and the importance of higher standards of animal welfare
A win win situation - please write to your MP and insist that they ensure the continuity of these success stories and protect the long term benefits rather than short term cost cuttings that would only end with turkey twizzlers and a bleak future that we have already glimpsed at didn't like
