Glastonbury With Artisan Food And Vegan Pizza!
June 23 2011
Endless stalls of burgers and hot dogs are no longer dominating the food scene at festivals throughout the country. This week at Glastonbury for example, you will be able to find delicious vegan-friendly pizza at Fire in the Hole and wash it down with some hand-made elderflower cordial from the Festival Elderflower Company. Who would have thought that possible five years ago?!
The trend towards improved standards started a few years ago at small events, as local organisers looked for something different and unique to attract the crowds. This opportunity, together with affordable pitches, meant individual traders could afford to stand, and standards have started to improve since then.
Jimmy Doherty was inspired by this success, and so founded ‘Harvest at Jimmy's’ in 2009. Harvest isn’t a food festival or a music festival but a bit of both, bringing together established performers and really enjoyable artisan food.
It was so successful that the pop-star turned farmer and cheese producer, Alex James of Blur, is hosting his own harvest ‘Alex James Presents Harvest’. There will be performances from bands including the Futureheads and Athlete, with delicious goodies created by Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, Yotam Ottolenghi and Mark Hix. Jamie Oliver is also joining the Harvest wagon, launching his "Feastival" later this year on Clapham Common.
The Independent recommends these places to eat at festivals throughout the country, big and small, and also tells us about the VIP areas!
