National Vegetarian Week 19 - 25 May
April 11 2008
Is it green to go vegetarian?
National Vegetarian Week may make us think about eating less meat, as we hear about the animal welfare and standards in meat production. We have recently seen how intensively reared chickens suffer, and this also applies to other animals.
However, did you know that it might also be greener to be vegetarian? According to the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (AJCN), 99% of Americans do not receive adequate nutrition from their food, and that of all the 900 million acres of farmland (over half the entire area of America), only 3% is used to grow fresh fruit and veggies, and less than 1% of that is organic.
Over 300 million acres of this farmland is used to grow animal feed, and the rest is mainly used to grow wheat, cotton, soya and corn (and these are not grown organically and so there will be pesticides etc used on this land).
Here is the rub. The AJCN also reported that the amount of grain fed to American livestock would feed 840 million veggies, and it takes 200,000 litres of water to produce 1kg of beef!
We have been used to seeing cows in fields in our country in traditional farms, but perhaps we should remember that it is not really that long ago that we were hunter gatherers, and that we did not have our own farms of cows at all. Perhaps it is time for a re-think.
If we are to have any chance at all of sustaining life, having enough food and water and protecting our planet, then we need to do something. Fast. Perhaps turning veggie may be the answer.
