Flying Less Can Stop Climate Change Before It Gets Dangerous

 Flying injects exhaust emissions directly into the upper part of the atmosphere, where they cause the most damage, and the biggest, simplest and quickest personal action we can all take, by far, to stop climate change reaching dangerous levels, would be to fly less.
As a comparison between personal eco friendly actions we can take, the CO2 emissions of a return flight from the UK to Malaga is about the same amount of CO2 saved by recycling nearly 15,000 green bottles, so you have to do an awful lot of recycling to come anywhere close!!
But, I can hear you say, I only fly on holiday once a year, sometimes every two years, does that mean I can never go abroad? Well, as almost a third of flights from the UK go to Spain and around half of the flights go to other European destinations, the train is a viable option, but are we all to blame? The answer to that seems to be no.
The majority of flights are taken by a small number of people who fly frequently. For example, a third of all flights in 2007 were taken by just 4% of the population who took five or more flights a year. So the most effective change would appear to be for frequent flyers to dramatically cut their air miles. Perhaps we could be rationed?!
Government plans do not seem to be encouraging this, as large-scale aviation expansion, includes a third runway and sixth terminal at Heathrow, and so it is down to us. Are we going to let a small number of people cause such a huge problem? Call for action – now!!
