Are We Indirectly Killing Off Rain Forest Because We Buy Cheap Meat?
July 21 2010
Acres of rainforest are destroyed every single year to grow genetically modified soybeans used for animal feed for British factory farms.
The animal feed is cheap and these cost savings allow factory farms to produce cheap meat and dairy for supermarkets. So if we buy these meat and dairy products, are we indirectly responsible for destroying the rainforest?
Maybe this is another good reason to support our local farmers who are trying to make a living and give good care to their animals - a mix that isnt always successful, with many going out of business on a weekly basis.
Another option would be to buy organic meat and dairy products, which may also help the bees and butterflies, as organic farmers don’t use neonicotinoid pesticides which are being linked to a decline in the bee population. We need bees to fertilise our crops and so helping them isnt just a nice thing to do - it is essential if we want to eat.
