Food Waste – The Solution
January 14 2010
According to the Government’s food waste agency, Wrap, we throw out a third of all the food we buy (although my instincts tell me that this has probably altered during this recession)
Nevertheless, if it is still true, a family with four children waste £610 a year. Wrap’s investigations of the nation’s rubbish bins found that even those of us that say they throw no food away still manage to discard 88kg a year.
I found that, as a busy working mum, I now try to buy our food according to what we actually need, rather than buy stuff in ‘just in case’. I also plan the meals for the next few days and ONLY buy what we need (it isn’t easy!!). Managing the fridge and eating things in date order comes easy to me so that wasn’t a problem, but we still have to come across surprise visits we have to make to relatives that throw our plans out of the window!!
So we do still get some waste (although it may not always be our fault!) so here is a great message for those that like gadgets - the Green Johanna (£98.95). This is a “hot” compost bin that takes cooked food and meat, unlike the basic ones, and the heat created in the rotting process kills off pathogens (according to the company, Green Cone) who are based in Nottingham and are absolutely delightful. Green Cone are also keen to join SUSU Organic as a promoter of E-SEE business
